TL;DR: Open YouTube Studio > Analytics > Audience to review repeat viewing. Returning viewers have watched your channel before; new viewers are new to it in the selected period. Compare trends with your recent uploads, and use the new, casual, and regular audience segments to understand viewing habits.

YouTube shows returning viewers in the Audience tab of YouTube Studio, where your monthly audience is split into new, casual, and regular viewers. Casual and regular viewers are your returning audience.

How to Analyze Returning Viewer Data on YouTube

Returning viewers and subscribers answer different questions. A viewer can come back without subscribing, while a subscriber may skip your uploads. Compare repeat viewing with your active audience instead of treating subscriber count as proof that people still watch.

We can see the difference between both behaviors on the vidIQ channel. Here is our audience data for new, casual, and regular viewers:

4 Ways to Make Viewers Return to Your YouTube Channel

Give viewers a reason to return, then review your audience reports to see how they respond.

  1. Know your audience. Study the topics your viewers watch, respond to comments, and, where posts are available, use a poll to ask which related topic they want next.
  2. Make the next video’s promise clear. Use a title and thumbnail that accurately describe what viewers will get; clicks alone do not establish repeat viewing.
  3. Deliver on that promise. Use the audience-retention report to find where viewers leave, and review watch time alongside it. Staying through one video and returning to your channel are different behaviors.
  4. Keep related videos connected. Build a series around a topic your viewers already watch, and group the episodes in a public playlist so the next relevant video is easy to find.

Then go back to the Audience tab in a few weeks and see which segment moved.

Build an Audience That Comes Back

New viewers grow your reach. Casual and regular viewers are what keep it. Check your audience split monthly, find the videos that move people from new to casual to regular, and make more of them.
